Baranja is an area that belongs to the wider lowland area of the natural-geographical macromorphological unit of the Pannonian Plain, as part of the geographical area of Eastern Croatia.<\/p>\n

The Baranja flood protection system is based on the Drava, Danube, and Drava-Danube embankments (over 130 km of embankments) and a series of melioration drainage channels that are a systematic component of the system. For the Baranja region, the system's construction and good condition have no alternative in terms of flood protection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The goal of the rehabilitation works is to achieve a good state of the flood defense system at its weakest part, which, as was shown during the high waters of the Danube in 2006, was the final 4.5 km of the Drava-Danube embankment connecting the Main Danube and Main Drava embankments.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation is carried out by strengthening the embankment with additional material on the defended side.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The works are carried out in the following order:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Removing the surface layer of the embankment slope with a thickness of 10 cm to 50 cm, which allows a visual inspection of the condition of the embankment, which is covered with a humus layer.<\/li>\n
  • Construction of a drainage system that ensures controlled drainage of leachate and enables monitoring of leachate volumes.<\/li>\n
  • Strengthening the defended slope of the embankment by building ballast on the defended toe of the embankment, which mitigates the slope of the embankment and keeps seepage lines in the body of the embankment. The existing condition of the defended slope requires intervention on its surface part due to the existence of a large number of molehills, burrows and other habitats of medium-sized animals, whose activity significantly affects the stability of the embankment.<\/li>\n
  • Restoring the old surface layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
